Games

As a huge fan of games, sports, and board games, I was excited to make a book based on a podcast of that exact topic. I was initially interested in the podcast because of the topic but also because the first section of the podcast talked about my hometown, the Bay Area, and my favorite hockey team. After listening to the podcast all the way through, I decided to focus my book on the middle section, which discussed the tension between rules and free will and how that creates for an exciting playing and, by extension, viewing experience. This section, focuses specifically on checkers and chess, so my initial brainstorming and moodboards focused on highlighting themes surrounding those topics.

My first concept was based off of chess manuals and instruction guides. A portion of the podcast is dedicated to these books and how their existence has impacted the way chess is played. Looking at these books, I was inspired by their compact and boxy layout, as well as the way chess games are recorded and represented.

My second concept was focused on the idea of randomness and chance present in games. Something the podcast focused heavily on was what they called “zero moment,” or times in games and sports where something occurs that has never happened before. I thought it would be interesting to represent this idea through drawings made using processing that could randomize elements of the drawing so no two drawings were alike. Additionally, I considered how I could also use the random() function to create a jumbled typeface.

During my experiments, I found that people enjoyed aspects of concepts, so I decided to merge the concepts together.
