Computer: Decrypted

This project focused on designing an experience of our choice, so I decided to create a project that would allow the viewer to experience opening up a laptop computer. Having worked as a student IT technician at WashU since freshman year, I have had the chance to open up, explore, and learn about computer hardware. At first it was an intimidating experience, but over time it got easier. I now thoroughly enjoy opening up and fixing computers. From personal experience, I know how scary it can be to open up a computer; and people are generally all right with leaving that part of a computer a mystery. However, I believe much can be gained from understanding how computers function; therefore, so I created an object that would provide an opportunity to investigate the inside of a computer and learn about what different components do without the risk of harming an actual computer.

I took apart a recycled computer and replaced the hardware with paper replicas. I left in all of the screws and tried to keep all fastening mechanics present to create an experience most similar to actually removing the component. Each component was replaced with three paper replicas that were decorated to represent an abstract image of the piece’s purpose. Lastly, to add a more informative aspect, you can scan the piece of paper to open an AR experience that animates the card and provides a written explanation of the component.

I also created a small tool kit that includes a small screwdriver, diagram of the inside of the computer, and strip of magnets to hold loose screws.
